It depends on weight.
The 45 kg threshold
The 45 kg is the dividing line. Below it, couriers are the only option: airlines simply do not accept consolidated consignments under that threshold, so DHL, FedEx-TNT, and UPS are not a choice so much as the default. Above it, we move to belly freight on scheduled passenger flights with carriers such as Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific, China Airlines, and Thai Airways, depending on your destination. These airlines offer competitive rates for heavier consolidated cargo
When the courier makes sense for shipments above 45 kg
That said, the split is not always so clean. For shipments above 45 kg where the consignee values convenience over cost, couriers remain a perfectly valid option. The defining advantage is delivering all the way to the door, not just to the destination airport. No local customs agent to arrange on the receiving end, no trip to an air freight terminal. The parcel arrives, duties are assessed, and the consignee pays. The carrier handles the entire last mile directly with them.
Import duties: how they are collected
On the subject of duties: for courier shipments, import taxes remain the consignee’s responsibility, just as they are for airline freight. The difference is simply how they are collected. DHL, FedEx-TNT, and UPS will contact the consignee at the destination and settle duty payment before releasing the goods. It is a smoother process for the buyer, but worth flagging to them in advance so there are no surprises.
A note on volumetric weight
One practical note on pricing: couriers apply a volumetric weight divisor of 5,000 rather than the airline standard of 6,000. For bulky but lightweight packages, this can result in a higher chargeable weight via courier than the same shipment would attract on an airline. We always run the numbers on both options before making a recommendation.
Our rates are not the rates you would get booking directly
Finally, it is worth knowing that our rates with DHL, FedEx-TNT, and UPS are not the rates you would get booking directly. Because we ship significant volumes with these carriers throughout the year, we operate on negotiated tariffs that individual or occasional shippers cannot access. In most cases, booking through us will cost you less than going to the courier directly… Sometimes considerably so.

When air freight makes sense
Air freight is the right call when time is the main constraint. As a general guide, door-to-door air shipments from Bali arrive within 3 to 10 days, depending on destination, compared to 25 to 45 days by sea. That speed comes at a cost: air freight typically runs around five times more expensive per kilogram than a sea freight equivalent. For high-value goods, time-sensitive orders, or anything that simply can’t sit in a container for a month, the premium is usually worth it.

How your shipment is priced
Chargeable weight: the basis of every air freight rate
Air freight is always billed on the chargeable weight: whichever is greater of the actual gross weight or the volumetric weight of your shipment.
How volumetric weight is calculated
Volumetric weight converts the physical space occupied by your cargo into an equivalent number of kilograms. The standard IATA formula used by airlines is:
(Length × Width × Height in cm) ÷ 6,000 = volumetric weight in kg
To put that in concrete terms: a box measuring 80 × 60 × 50 cm has a volumetric weight of 40 kg. If the box actually weighs 25 kg, you are billed for 40 kg. If it weighs 50 kg, you are billed for 50 kg. The actual weight only wins when it exceeds the volumetric figure.
Couriers apply a divisor of 5,000 rather than 6,000, which produces a slightly higher chargeable weight for the same dimensions. For bulky but lightweight shipments, this difference is worth checking before assuming courier and airline rates are directly comparable. We always do this calculation before making a recommendation.

Other factors that affect your rate
Beyond weight, rates vary by destination, cargo type, and urgency. Certain categories (live animals, dangerous goods, temperature-sensitive products) carry additional handling requirements that affect the final figure. We take all of this into account when building your quote.
What our quotations include
For airline freight, our quotations are door-to-airport. The price covers collection from your Bali supplier, export customs clearance, all local handling, and delivery to the destination airport. What it does not cover is what happens on the other side: import duties, local VAT, destination port handling fees, and customs clearance at the receiving end are the responsibility of the consignee. If your buyer has not yet arranged local clearance, let us know, and we can point them in the right direction.
For courier shipments, the scope is different and generally simpler: the service is door-to-door. DHL, FedEx-TNT, and UPS deliver directly to the consignee’s address. Import duties and local taxes are still the consignee’s responsibility, but the carrier manages the collection process directly with them before releasing the goods. There is no need for the buyer to engage a separate customs agent or collect from an air freight terminal.
