Container dimensions
When booking an FCL shipment from Bali, the container size determines both the cost and the logistics of packing. The three types Limajari Cargo works with — the 20-foot, 40-foot, and 40-foot High Cube — share the same ISO standard width and door width, but differ in length, height, and the volume they can carry.
All measurements below are for dry containers. Limajari uses these for sea and overland freight only, not for air shipments.
| DIMENSIONS | 20-foot | 40-foot | 40-foot High Cube |
|---|---|---|---|
| External dimensions | 6.06 × 2.44 × 2.59m | 12.19 × 2.44 × 2.59m | 12.19 × 2.44 × 2.90m |
| Internal dimensions | 5.89 × 2.35 × 2.39m | 12.02 × 2.35 × 2.39m | 12.02 × 2.35 × 2.70m |
| Internal volume | ~33 cbm | ~68 cbm | ~76 cbm |
| Door opening | 2.34 × 2.28m | 2.34 × 2.28m | 2.34 × 2.58m |
| Max payload | ~28,200 kg | ~28,800 kg | ~28,560 kg |
| Tare weight | ~2,300 kg | ~3,750 kg | ~3,900 kg |
Dimensions follow ISO 668. Actual figures vary slightly between manufacturers and container condition — always confirm with your carrier before booking.
The 20-foot container
The 20ft is compact and suited to dense cargo: stone carvings, ceramics, metal goods, or mixed goods that hit weight limits before they fill all available space. At roughly 33 cubic meters of internal volume, it fits around 10 to 11 standard pallets in a single layer.
One thing worth knowing: the 20ft and 40ft have nearly identical payload limits. If your cargo is heavy but not bulky — say, a shipment of teak furniture with dense pieces — a 20ft can be a better fit than paying for a 40ft you won’t fill.
Best for: heavy or compact cargo, shipments under 15 cbm moving FCL for other reasons (product sensitivity, delivery timing), and routes where container availability is tighter on larger sizes.
The 40-foot container
Double the volume of a 20ft, at roughly 68 cubic meters. The 40ft is the default choice for large shipments of furniture, garments, or mixed goods where volume, not weight, is the limiting factor. It fits around 20 to 24 standard pallets in a single layer.
Because a 40ft costs meaningfully less per cubic meter than two 20ft containers on most routes, it’s the more cost-effective choice once your shipment clearly exceeds 15 cbm.
Best for: bulkier FCL shipments, furniture, textiles, household goods, and most large commercial exports from Bali.
The 40-foot High Cube
Identical to the 40ft in length and width, but 30 centimetres taller externally (2.90m vs 2.59m). That translates to an extra 31 centimetres of internal clearance (2.70m vs 2.39m), adding roughly 8.6 cubic meters of volume — about 13% more than a standard 40ft.
The High Cube also has a taller door opening: 2.58m versus 2.28m on the standard containers. That matters for anything that needs to be moved in standing upright — tall furniture, gazebos, decorative pieces.
Best for: tall or lightweight items that would otherwise waste the ceiling space in a standard 40ft. Bali exports like gazebos, large furniture, and packaged textile rolls are typical candidates.

Which size is right for your shipment
As a general rule, if your goods take up more than 15 cubic meters, a Full Container Load will usually cost less per cbm than shipping LCL. Beyond that threshold, the choice between 20ft, 40ft, and 40ft HC depends on the volume and height of your cargo.
Not sure? Our team can calculate the estimated CBM of your shipment from a packing list or photos and recommend the right container — before you commit to anything.
A few practical points
Weight limits apply regardless of volume. Even if a 40ft container isn’t full, cargo weight cannot exceed roughly 28,000 to 28,800 kg, depending on the route and carrier. Dense cargo — stone, cast iron, bulk materials — can hit weight limits before filling the space.
The internal width is narrower than the external width. All three container types measure 2.44m wide externally, but only 2.35m internally. Standard pallets (1.2 × 0.8m) fit comfortably; non-standard pallet sizes should be confirmed before packing.
High Cube containers are sometimes assumed to cost significantly more. In practice, the rate premium is usually small — check with our team whether HC availability is possible on your route before defaulting to a standard 40ft if vertical space is a concern.
